Streetwise® Stun Guns
Protect yourself from Attack! A stun gun is a non-lethal weapon that discharges a high voltage, but low-amperage shock that will cause your attacker to become immobilized for several minutes. No permanent harm is caused. When used lawfully, Stun guns are considered an effective means of using force.

Stun guns are legal in many states, and can be carried concealed or unconcealed, without a license. Although the possession and use of stun guns is allowed in most states, there are several states and some cities which prohibit or restrict them. Please see the stun gun state law link to verify the legality in your area.

A stun gun does not propel wires as do air tasers. Instead, they have two prongs or electrodes protruding at one end. When you touch the business end against an attacker and activate the trigger, an electrical charge passes into their body. The charge delivered by a stun gun will pass through the clothes of an attacker, but it will not pass back into the body of the the defender/victim, even if there is body contact between attacker and victim.

The length of time a stun gun stays in contact with the attacker determines what kind of effect the gun produces. A contact time of 1/2 second will get an attacker's attention and cause some discomfort and muscle contractions. Contact time of 1-2 seconds will daze the assailant and produce muscle spasms, while 1-5 seconds will deliver the maximum benefit of total loss of muscle control and balance. Recovery time will be several minutes.

A stun gun acts on the muscular and nervous systems, rather than inflicting pain. The discharge over-stimulates the attacker's muscles causing hyperactivity of the muscle tissue, which depletes the attacker's blood sugar by converting it to lactic acid. Without blood sugar, the muscles have no energy to function, rendering the attacker immobile. This biological domino effect occurs within seconds of being stunned, and the attacker enters a mental stupor and is rendered incapable of further aggression.

Stun guns come in a variety of models. They vary in size from very small devices that will fit within the palm of a hand to much larger baton units that will allow stopping an attacker from a greater distance. Regardless of the size of the stun gun, voltage of the units begin at about 100,000 volts and go up to 1,000,000 (1 Million) volts.

Stun guns have not been shown to have any negative effects on the heart or organs. A lethal dose is rated at 1 full amp. The amount of amperage needed to be considered dangerous is well beyond what stun guns are designed to deliver.

Stun guns are designed to use either rechargeable, replaceable batteries, or are rechargeable units that have a permanent rechargeable battery inside. Stun guns will deliver several discharges before requiring battery replacement or recharging.

As indicated above, some states restrict the use of stun guns. Before purchasing a stun gun as a defensive weapon, be sure to check with local law enforcement for applicable laws.
